In March 2023, a three-year-old boy tragically passed away shortly after receiving an influenza vaccination at a Singapore hospital. His parents, still grappling with grief, seek answers to this devastating loss.
The couple, referred to as Mr. and Mrs. S, have struggled to resume normalcy in the wake of their son's passing. They chose anonymity, not out of fear, but to shield themselves from the heartbreak of explaining their son's absence to others.
The ordeal began on March 1st, 2023, when they took their son to KK Women's and Children's Hospital for a check-up following a prior asthma-related complication. The doctor noted his recovery progress and recommended additional medication, suggesting a reduction in dosage after six months if all went well.
During the visit, they were unexpectedly asked if their son had received an influenza vaccine. Trusting their healthcare provider's judgment, they consented.
After signing a document provided by a nurse, they allowed their son to receive the vaccination. They were advised to monitor for fever and administer fever-reducing medication if necessary.
Tragically, their son developed a fever that night, which escalated into uncontrollable convulsions the following day. Despite their efforts, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was rushed back to the hospital.
The parents vividly remember the heart-wrenching moments when their son's health declined, culminating in his passing. Medical professionals put him on life support, but the parents ultimately decided to end his suffering on March 5th.
The official cause of death was cited as “other viral specific encephalitis,” with indications of acute fulminant encephalitis/acute necrotizing encephalitis (ANEC) based on a CT scan and clinical findings.
The parents faced difficulty obtaining clear answers from the hospital. A representative made an insensitive analogy, likening their situation to a lottery win after a car accident. Despite receiving an apology for the remarks, the hospital maintained that their vaccination policy was sound.
The couple refrained from an autopsy, opting to preserve what remained of their son. They are determined to seek some form of “justice” and an apology from the hospital.
Despite the pain, Mr. and Mrs. S hope that something positive can emerge from their tragedy. They aim to establish a support group for others who have lost children, with the goal of preventing further loss of innocent lives. Their deepest wish is that their son's passing was not in vain.
