Tennessee recently implemented a new law that allows parents to opt their children out of school-required vaccinations based on religious objections. Effective from January 1, 2022, the law mandates schools to provide exemption forms for students whose parents cite religious beliefs against vaccination. This exemption applies to all vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as stated by the state’s department of education.

Jerry Sexton, one of the bill’s sponsors, emphasized, “As a parent, you have the right to make decisions about your child’s health care. This legislation simply ensures that our schools respect those rights.”

Dr. Michelle Fiscus, medical director of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Health Policy Program, asserts, “Vaccines are a cornerstone of public health, and they work best when everyone participates.” She further highlighted that even slight declines in vaccination rates can endanger vulnerable populations, including young children and individuals with compromised immune systems.
According to the CDC, Tennessee currently ranks among the bottom five states in the nation for vaccination rates, with only approximately 90% of kindergarteners being fully vaccinated. Nationally, the rate is closer to 95%.
Public health experts stress the significance of achieving herd immunity through high vaccination rates to prevent the spread of contagious diseases like measles, mumps, and pertussis. They point to recent outbreaks in other states, such as New York and Washington, as evidence of the risks associated with low vaccination rates.
Despite opposition from health professionals, the law received widespread support among Tennessee lawmakers, passing the House by a vote of 64-27 and the Senate by 24-8. Governor Bill Lee signed it into law last May.
