As health experts sound the alarm, ‘Disease X’ emerges as a potential pandemic that could surpass COVID-19’s impact by twentyfold.
Experts posit that Disease X may be a zoonotic disease, capable of leaping from animals to humans. However, the virus remains unidentified by current scientific knowledge.
Estimates suggest Disease X could claim up to 50 million lives worldwide, echoing the devastating toll of the 1918-19 flu pandemic, which eclipsed the casualties of World War I.
At present, the priority diseases are:
- Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
- Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease
- Lassa fever Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
- Nipah and henipaviral diseases
- Rift Valley fever Zika
