According to a new study conducted by the University of East Anglia (UEA), face masks were not effective in preventing the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.
The variant led to the reintroduction of face masks and strict Covid rules, including self-isolation, working from home, and vaccine passports. However, the study found that these measures had little to no effect on preventing the spread of Omicron.
The research revealed that face masks, in particular, were not effective once the first wave of Omicron had passed. While they did help reduce infection rates previously, they did not provide the same level of protection against the Omicron variant. The study also suggested that children may have been more at risk of catching Covid by wearing a face mask after the first wave of Omicron due to their lower immunity.
The lead author of the study, Professor Paul Hunter, explained that the value of masks was always in delaying the pandemic until most people had been vaccinated. Masks contributed to this delay and likely saved many lives during earlier stages of the pandemic. However, once Covid-19 became more infectious with the emergence of Omicron, masks were ultimately of no value for most people.
The study also highlighted that masks were linked to a 19% reduction in infections during early periods of the pandemic. However, this did not account for the much more transmissible nature of the Omicron variant. The experts suggested that masks only served to delay the infection rather than preventing it entirely.
