Britain is set to reject a global vaccine treaty proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) due to concerns that it would require the country to give away a fifth of its vaccines.
The treaty, which aims to address future global health emergencies, states that member states must allocate 20% of pandemic-related health products to other countries. In addition, the treaty prohibits stockpiling of supplies such as therapeutics, personal protective equipment (PPE), and vaccines.
The UK is reportedly unwilling to sign the treaty as it undermines the country's sovereignty and autonomy over its own assets.
However, officials have stated that the UK may reconsider if there is a commitment to prioritize British-made vaccines for the country's national interest. The rejection of the treaty by Britain raises questions about its potential impact on global efforts to address future pandemics.
