The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has accepted the recommendation of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic to debar EcoHealth Alliance, Inc. (EcoHealth), a non-profit organization. This decision comes after the Select Subcommittee released a report detailing EcoHealth's wrongdoing, including facilitating gain-of-function research in Wuhan, China without proper oversight and violating requirements of its National Institutes of Health grant.
HHS will begin official debarment proceedings and suspend all U.S. taxpayer funds to EcoHealth, including active grants. This move is seen as a victory for American national security and the safety of citizens worldwide. The investigation into EcoHealth and the origins of COVID-19 is still ongoing, and the Subcommittee expects EcoHealth to produce outstanding documents and answer questions related to potential dishonesty under oath.
The Select Subcommittee is committed to holding EcoHealth accountable for any waste, fraud, and abuse, including lying to Congress, NIH, or the Inspector General.
